The Songs I Remember (see my weekly letter number thirteen, November 18):
Dionne Warwick, "Alfie": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GahH4j48HM
(Another interesting version of this song was sung by Warwick's niece, Whitney Houston: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRzCzr6Zalo)
Barbra Streisand, "People": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhOap2Vldaw
Liza Minnelli, "Cabaret" (imagine me as a boy singing this song while my mother played the piano -- those were good times!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moOamKxW844
If you want to hear a great singing voice (too many pretenders these days), please listen to Whitney Houston singing (I dare you not to get goose bumps or even cry like I do because she is no longer with us), "I Will Always Love You"; may she rest in peace...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSSGC9frPR8&feature=related

My Earliest Hero (After My Father) and the Only Hero I Continue to Admire since I was a Child till Now: Joe Frazier, fighter
joe_frazier.doc | |

Joe Frazier has been one my heroes since I was a boy; in fact, he is the only childhood hero I continue to revere now that I am a grown man. I saw him defeat Muhammad Ali in their first fight, and I thought then that he was the toughest boxer that I had ever seen. Contemporaries Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, both former world heavyweight champions and both victors over Frazier, said that Frazier was the toughest fighter they had ever faced. Foreman added that, when he knocked down Frazier six times (YES, SIX TIMES!) in their fight, he saw Frazier get up each time. "They stopped the fight. Joe Frazier did not stop the fight." I saw him fight Muhammad Ali in the Thrilla in Manila, and after fourteen rounds of watching his fighter get pummeled by Ali, Frazier's trainer, Eddie Futch, had to stop the fight because Frazier could not see out of one eye, but Frazier still wanted to go after Ali and pleaded with his trainer to let him go out to finish the fight. "Nobody's going to forget what you did here tonight," Futch told Frazier before throwing in the towel to stop the fight and protect his fighter.
As a boy, I wanted to be tough just like JOE FRAZIER, but I was not born tough enough. I was built to be sensitive, my Mommy's Baby, but maybe I pushed myself to become a little tougher because I witnessed Frazier's toughness. I later learned that he too was a sensitive man. On a television talk show, Jack Benny, the famous comedian, said to him, "You are one of the nicest people I have ever met."
Joe Frazier died from liver cancer in November last year. It was the only time he was knocked down -- and did not get up...
